Are we Double-Dipping or not?

If you read or watch the news about the UK’s economic outlook at the moment you could be forgiven for not understanding whether we are going into a double-dip recession or not. Today in a report on the BBC website the CBI stated that the UK will not go into recession, whereas or trade bodies present a somewhat gloomier picture. The BDO stated that company turnovers continued to fall, whilst the CIPD found that more businesses are looking to reduce headcounts in an attempt to get leaner.
As a recruiter, I have also got the impression that there is a mixed picture across the different sectors we recruit for. On balance we have found the outlook more positive than negative, especially in the manufacturing sector. The new Range Rover Evoque is in high demand and the Halewood site is near full capacity and struggling to keep up with global demand. This is not only good for Jaguar Land Rover, but also for all businesses in the supply chain. The Aerospace industry is also experiencing healthy sales results and this has even resulted in the creation of new roles within the supply chain in order to fulfil the demand.
The problem is that there are still a number of businesses out there that are seeing falling sales and are finding it more difficult to survive. There is still pressure on every organisation to improve efficiencies, take out cost and unfortunately, reduce head count. From a recruitment perspective this cost cutting drive can still be a positive. Many of our clients are looking at all areas of the business, especially indirect spend, and are looking to bring in individuals who can renegotiate with suppliers and take more cost out.
