Whether you’re a football fan or not, you have to admit everyone’s talking about Fabio Capello’s resignation. The biggest question on most people’s minds is who’s going to take over from the Italian Manager?

Clearly for any Brit the preference is for the replacement to be English and rumours are already rife linking Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp with the vacancy.

Even Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand and striker Wayne Rooney are backing Redknapp by posting their thoughts all over Twitter.

However, FA chairman David Bernstein has refused to comment and although he expects "to move quickly" says he will have to do it properly and get a shortlist together. “We will do this as quickly and as sensibly as we can do it properly and professionally.

"It will be interesting what we hear, and who comes to us. We will be putting a shortlist together and it will be a major priority for us."

It appears Bernstein has a tough job ahead of him. I can only imagine the list isn’t that short at the minute with pressure from every angle of a speedy new appointment. Or I might be totally wrong and there’s already a pretty tight shortlist to start with.

But that shortlist is vital, as is the way they go about putting it together. On a daily basis I am short listing candidates. OK so I might not have the weight of crazed footy fans and the bull dog British media biting at my side to produce the best person for the job, but the idea is the same, in recruitment time is the essence without room for hesitation or error and the client wants the best candidate for the job.

As every recruiter knows, this game is competitive, just like football, but with speed must come professionalism like Bernstein has reported saying. Some might think the short listing process is about sending every Tom, Dick and Harry to a client. But for me there is more to the process than volume. I have always led by the rule quality over quantity, which saves both parties a lot of time.

I might have time against me, just like Bernstein, but that extra detail given in the short listing process is what will bring the best results. That being said, me amongst thousands of other people wouldn’t mind winning a World Cup sometime soon, so no pressure Mr Chairman...find us a Manager who can lead us to victory. Ps. I’m happy to help with the short listing if you’re struggling!
