There are so many different attitudes out there when it comes to dress conduct in the workplace. This is obviously quite extreme in terms of expectation (and in fairness it does say it was meant for customer facing individuals) however it even has an expectation on the quality of employees breath.

Nowadays expectation has generally relaxed somewhat ranging from polo shirts as standard to smart casual wear being perfectly acceptable. I think that the acceptable level often reflects the business attitude and approach.

I often notice that companies with a relaxed dress policy can also be very employee orientated businesses with a keenness to invest in their staff and develop them wherever possible.

The more formal businesses can be a little old fashioned in their approach and not as forward thinking and modern in their attitudes to staff.

This is not a rule of thumb just an observation on my part when it comes to manufacturing environments and obviously more corporate environments like UBS adopt a more boardroom style of dress.

However I think this attitude is extending to many other lines of work and as an example as a Recruitment professional myself I seldom wear a tie to client meetings to promote a more personal approach to recruitment and fit in with my clients.

What is the expectation in your business?
