Power Systems Engineer

An exciting opportunity is available for a Power Systems Engineer with a strong focus on the design and modelling of power electronics systems.

The role involves designing and developing advanced power electronic circuits and systems, using tools such as MATLAB, Simulink and LTspice for modelling, analysis and simulation.

As part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will contribute to the development of advanced power systems for marine, aerospace and defence applications, including motor drives, inverters, converters and power management systems.

This is an opportunity to work on technically challenging designs that solve real-world engineering problems within high-reliability environments.

Key Responsibilities

Power Electronics Design

  • Design and develop power electronic circuits, including DC-DC converters, AC-DC rectifiers, inverters and motor drives.

  • Apply industry best practice to develop high-efficiency, compact and reliable power systems.

  • Ensure designs meet performance, safety, reliability and cost requirements.

  • Select appropriate components while balancing technical and commercial considerations.

Modelling & Simulation

  • Use MATLAB, Simulink and LTspice to model and simulate power electronic systems.

  • Develop system-level simulations to predict behaviour under different operating conditions.

  • Analyse both transient and steady-state performance.

  • Develop digital control models for power electronics systems, including feedback loops, stability and performance optimisation.

Design Verification & Validation

  • Develop and execute design verification plans to ensure systems meet specified requirements.

  • Work closely with test engineers to validate designs through hardware testing.

  • Compare test results against simulation models and make appropriate design adjustments.

  • Analyse test data and refine models and designs to improve system performance.

System Integration

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to integrate power electronics into larger systems, including motor drives, pumps and energy management systems.

  • Ensure effective integration of control algorithms with power electronics hardware.

  • Optimise overall system efficiency, stability and performance.

Design Documentation

  • Produce and maintain detailed technical documentation, including circuit diagrams, simulation results and technical reports.

  • Develop specification sheets, design justifications and user documentation for internal and customer use.

Continuous Improvement

  • Keep up to date with developments in power electronics, semiconductor technology and modelling tools.

  • Identify opportunities to improve performance, reliability and cost.

  • Apply emerging technologies and engineering techniques to existing and future designs.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics or a related discipline, with a focus on power electronics design and modelling.

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience designing and modelling power electronic systems such as inverters, converters or motor drives.

  • Strong understanding of system-level design and circuit analysis.

  • Practical experience using MATLAB, Simulink and LTspice for modelling and simulation.

Technical Skills

  • Strong expertise in power electronics design, particularly high-efficiency power converters and control systems.

  • Proficiency with MATLAB, Simulink and LTspice.

  • Strong circuit analysis and power semiconductor selection skills.

  • Knowledge of control algorithms for power electronics, including digital control.

  • Familiarity with semiconductor devices such as MOSFETs and IGBTs and their application in power electronics.

Desirable Experience

  • Thermal management and EMC considerations for power electronics.

  • Magnetic component design, including inductors and transformers.

  • Experience within marine, aerospace or defence environments.

  • Experience developing power electronics for high-reliability or demanding applications.

The Opportunity

This role offers the opportunity to work on advanced power electronics solutions for challenging environments, contributing to innovative projects while developing specialist expertise in a highly technical field.

You will be part of a collaborative engineering environment where modelling, design, testing and continuous improvement come together to solve complex real-world problems.

Security Requirements

Applicants must meet the relevant security vetting requirements for the role.

Due to national security requirements, applicants must be British nationals. Dual nationals may be considered in exceptional circumstances.
