Principal Electronics Engineer

About the Role

A specialist engineering organisation is seeking an experienced Principal Electronics Engineer to join its growing, multi-disciplinary engineering team.

The organisation designs, manufactures, and delivers high-integrity, power-dense electronic systems for demanding applications where performance, reliability, and innovation are critical. Its technology supports complex programmes across highly regulated industries, solving challenging engineering problems with real-world impact.

As a Principal Electronics Engineer, you will be a key technical leader within the organisation, helping to define engineering direction, drive best practice, and provide expert guidance across multiple projects and programmes.

This role offers the opportunity to combine hands-on electronics design expertise with technical leadership, customer engagement, and strategic influence within a dynamic engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of complex electronic systems from concept through to production and in-service support.

• Act as the technical authority for electronics across multiple projects and programmes.

• Define system and subsystem requirements, ensuring solutions meet customer, regulatory, and operational needs.

• Provide expert guidance on analogue and mixed-signal electronic design, architecture, and component selection.

• Conduct circuit analysis, simulation, design reviews, and technical investigations.

• Oversee schematic capture and guide PCB layout activities to ensure optimum performance, manufacturability, and reliability.

• Support verification, integration, qualification, and production activities.

• Work closely with customers, suppliers, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to solve complex technical challenges.

• Mentor and develop engineers, helping to build technical excellence across the organisation.

• Contribute to engineering strategy, technology roadmaps, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Skills & Experience

• HNC, HND, Degree, or equivalent qualification in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.

• Significant experience designing electronic systems within high-reliability or regulated industries.

• Strong analogue electronics design and circuit simulation expertise.

• Proven ability to lead technical activities and influence engineering decisions.

• Experience with communication protocols such as RS485, SPI, I²C, CAN, or similar.

• Strong understanding of component selection, derating, reliability, and lifecycle considerations.

• Experience producing and reviewing schematics and technical documentation.

• Understanding of PCB design principles, layout supervision, and design-for-manufacture practices.

• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with customers, suppliers, and engineering teams.

• Self-motivated and collaborative, with the ability to lead technical delivery in a fast-paced environment.

Desirable Experience

• EMC design experience.

• Digital circuit design experience.

• Wiring definition experience.

• Experience with Altium Designer.

• Experience working within the defence or aerospace sectors.
