An opportunity has arisen for a Development Engineer to join an established engineering organisation within its Development Capability team.

This role would be ideal for an engineer looking to develop a broad range of engineering knowledge and practical skills. It offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience across evaluation, pre-production and validation activities while supporting the wider Engineering team.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment, with a competitive salary and flexible working arrangements that allow working hours to be managed around core business needs.

Role Purpose

Reporting to the Development Lead Engineer, the successful candidate will play a key role within a dedicated team supporting the development and testing of electrical, electronic and electromechanical systems.

Working closely with project and engineering teams, the Development Engineer will undertake systems development testing and a range of engineering activities to support projects and develop solutions that successfully meet project objectives.

Key Responsibilities

The role will include, but is not limited to:

  • Undertaking systems development testing and engineering activities in support of projects.

  • Designing and developing system test equipment and test suites.

  • Conducting development and qualification testing.

  • Producing schematic and design capture.

  • Supporting component selection, advice and technical reviews.

  • Undertaking engineering tasks as required by projects and the wider business.

  • Conducting laboratory and product testing.

  • Supporting verification and qualification test programmes.

  • Preparing appropriate technical documentation, reports and specifications in line with company procedures.

  • Participating in internal and external meetings as required.

  • Supporting equipment installation and commissioning activities where required.

  • Providing occasional support at off-site commissioning, trials and testing activities, including potential overseas travel.

  • Undertaking other reasonable engineering tasks as directed by the Engineering and Project functions.

Skills & Knowledge

The successful candidate will have skills and knowledge appropriate to the development and support of electronic, electrical and mechanical systems, including:

  • Practical experience of live testing of low-voltage electrical and electronic equipment (below 1,000V).

  • A good understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act and relevant policies, safe working practices and operating procedures.

  • Experience or knowledge of digital and analogue electronic circuit design is desirable.

  • Knowledge of software methodologies and some programming experience is desirable.

  • An interest in continuous learning and professional development, with a willingness to develop skills through practical, on-the-job experience.

  • A flexible, hands-on approach and willingness to undertake a varied range of engineering activities.

  • Experience or willingness to work across electronic design and development, technical documentation, specifications, reports and presentations.

  • Experience supporting equipment installation, test equipment development and the assembly of test boxes and circuits.

  • Occasional soldering and wiring experience would be advantageous.

  • Ability to organise and support verification and qualification testing, including EMC, shock, vibration and climatic testing.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly to customers and other stakeholders.

  • A broad range of general engineering skills, including an understanding of systems engineering methodologies, safety and configuration control.

  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.

  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines.

  • Good decision-making skills and the ability to evaluate potential solutions and understand the implications of decisions.

  • Ability to take ownership of tasks, use initiative and identify opportunities for improvement.

  • A creative and innovative approach, with an enthusiasm for developing new ideas and testing new concepts.

  • Ability to respond positively to change and adapt to changing project and business requirements.

  • Confidence to communicate opinions and technical viewpoints constructively and influence others where appropriate.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain ideas clearly and convincingly.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • HNC, HND, BTEC or higher qualification in Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent qualification combined with suitable previous engineering experience.

  • A Level qualifications at Grades A–C or equivalent.

  • GCSE Grades 9–4/A–C in Mathematics and English, or equivalent.

Additional Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to travel to alternative UK locations and overseas locations for occasional off-site activities, testing, commissioning or trials.

  • Flexibility to work overtime and, when required, outside standard working hours to support project and business requirements.

The Opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer seeking a varied and hands-on development role, offering exposure to electrical and electronic systems, testing, validation, engineering design and project support within a technically focused environment.
