Overview
This role focuses on the design, analysis, integration and assurance of electrical power systems within advanced technology and defence programmes. You will work across the full lifecycle, supporting concept studies through to validation, qualification and in-service support, collaborating with multi-disciplinary engineering teams in a hybrid working model.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop power system architectures including generation, conversion, distribution, protection and energy storage.
- Perform load analysis, power budgets, efficiency and thermal impact assessments, and support equipment sizing.
- Model and simulate power networks (steady-state and transient) to verify performance and stability.
- Specify and review requirements, interfaces and verification plans; maintain traceability and compliance evidence.
- Produce and review technical documentation: specifications, design reports, test procedures, test reports and safety artefacts.
- Support EMC/EMI considerations, grounding/bonding, power quality, harmonics and fault studies.
- Conduct design reviews, manage technical risks and contribute to configuration control.
- Support laboratory and on-site testing, troubleshooting and root-cause investigations.
Essential Requirements
- Strong experience in power systems engineering, including converters (AC/DC, DC/DC), protection and distribution.
- Competence with modelling/simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, PSpice or equivalent).
- Understanding of relevant standards and practices (e.g., IEC/BS standards, safety and assurance processes).
- Experience working in a regulated environment, ideally defence, aerospace, rail or nuclear.
- Ability to produce clear, auditable engineering documentation and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain UK security clearance (subject to checks).
Desirable
- Experience with high-reliability systems, redundancy strategies, and mission-critical power design.
- Experience with qualification testing, environmental requirements and fielded system support.
